Wind Thinning
Wind thinning is a common practice to reduce the wind drag of taller trees, especially evergreens, and to mitigate the amount of potential branch breakage and tree loss which happens during wind storms. This is very beneficial especially if the tree is abnormally thick or hasn’t been properly cleaned in a long while.
More light and air are let through as a result, reducing disease and the possibility of broken debris becoming stuck within the canopy. Wind thinning can also give evergreens a more clean, uniform, proper look. Cleaning large evergreens is a good practice every 5-7 years to inspect the tree closely and to remove any dead wood that will have accumulated over time, especially if the trees are near more frequented areas.
